Italian maternity centers report varying birth trends and service quality

Healthcare facilities in Italy are reporting varying trends regarding maternity services and birth rates. At the AORN San Pio in Benevento, the obstetrics and gynecology department recorded 11 births within a 24-hour period between August 9 and August 10. Since January 1, the hospital has seen 550 births, representing a 7.5% increase compared to the same period last year, a trend that contrasts with the general national decline in birth rates.

In another region, local institutions and Asl Toscana sud est are advocating for the future of the Nottola birth center. Despite not meeting the threshold of 500 births per year due to declining national birth rates, officials highlighted the facility's high quality of care. Notably, the cesarean section rate at Nottola dropped to 8.51% in 2026, significantly lower than national averages. The facility also maintains a specialized interdepartmental pediatric cardiology area to enhance neonatal safety.
