Italian media figures pursue legal action over online harassment
Journalists and television personalities in Italy are pursuing legal action following waves of online harassment and sexist abuse.
Giulia Innocenzi, a reporter for the program ‘Report’, announced she has instructed her lawyer to file individual complaints against users who targeted her with sexist insults. Innocenzi reported receiving comments on social media that attacked her professional integrity by suggesting her career advancements were due to sexual favors rather than merit. She described the online environment as a “form of violence” and stated her decision to sue is both a personal defense and an act of solidarity with other women facing similar treatment.
Separately, the contestants known as ‘Le Pappardelle’—Maria Giulia Bardi, Carolina Mischi, and Francesca Garbin—from the RaiUno game show ‘Reazione a Catena’ have also decided to take legal action. After a record-breaking 48-episode run on the show, the trio faced significant aggression and defamatory accusations on social media. While acknowledging the right to legitimate criticism, the contestants stated that many comments crossed the line of legality and decency, prompting them to seek legal recourse to protect their images.
