Italian medical advancements improve colorectal cancer screening and diagnosis

Medical advancements in colorectal cancer screening and diagnostic technology have been highlighted through recent Italian research and investments.

At the IRCCS CROB in Rionero in Vulture, a 500,000 euro investment funded by the PNRR has upgraded digestive endoscopy capabilities. The new equipment includes advanced endoscopic columns, colonoscopes, an ecoendoscope, and an integrated artificial intelligence system. These tools aim to improve the diagnosis of colon, pancreas, and biliary tract pathologies, specifically focusing on the early detection of precancerous lesions and initial-stage tumors.

Separately, the results of the Platone study were recognized at the Endo 2026 congress in Cape Town. This multicenter Italian study, coordinated by the Gastroenterology department of Pescia, addressed barriers to colonoscopy in elderly patients. The research demonstrated that a low-volume preparation of one liter is as effective, and in some aspects superior, to the standard two-liter preparation for intestinal cleansing and lesion identification. This finding aims to increase screening compliance among older populations by simplifying the preparation process.
