European Commission proposes new cardiovascular health screening guidelines

The European Commission has proposed a new recommendation to encourage regular cardiovascular health monitoring across EU member states. Under the Safe Hearts Plan, the Commission aims to reduce premature cardiovascular deaths by 25 percent by 2035. The initiative highlights that cardiovascular diseases affect approximately 62 million people in the EU, causing 1.7 million deaths annually and costing the economy over €282 billion.

The proposal suggests structured health checks based on age: at least one check-up before age 35, systematic checks every five years for those aged 35–64, and every three to five years for those over 65. These screenings should focus on key risk factors including blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, obesity, and lifestyle habits. The Commission notes that up to 80 percent of these cases can be prevented by addressing these modifiable risks.

In support of these goals, the first EU Screening Week was launched to promote early detection. Additionally, various regional and national initiatives are active, such as Italy’s National Prevention Plan 2026-2031 and the expansion of telecardiology services in Italian pharmacies to increase accessibility to cardiac exams.
