Italian medical teams perform complex multi-tumor removals in single surgeries
Medical teams in Italy have successfully performed complex surgeries involving the simultaneous removal of multiple tumors in single operations.
At the Irccs Bonino Pulejo in Messina, a multidisciplinary team operated on a 72-year-old man to remove three different neoplasms that appeared during the same period. The single, highly complex procedure involved the removal of the kidney, ureter, bladder, prostate, and a section of the colon (sigma). Doctors noted the rarity of encountering three distinct pathologies appearing simultaneously.
In Bari, at the Istituto Tumori Giovanni Paolo II, surgeons utilized the Da Vinci robotic platform to treat a 76-year-old patient. In one session, the team removed two lesions from the left kidney and a neoplasm from the body and tail of the pancreas, along with the spleen. The integrated approach allowed for the use of the same abdominal access points, reducing invasiveness.
