Italy rolls out national 'Mathematics High School' pilot in 100 schools

The Italian Ministry of Education and Merit approved decree No. 104 on 10 June 2026 to launch a five‑year experimental programme called “Liceo matematico”. It will begin in the 2026/27 school year in 100 secondary schools selected across the country.

The scheme adds extra mathematics laboratory hours – two additional weekly hours in the first two years and one extra hour in the upper three years – and is open to classical, scientific and scientific‑applied curricula. Universities will cooperate in delivering the labs, which focus on artificial‑intelligence modelling, problem‑solving and dynamic software tools, and promote interdisciplinary links with the humanities.

Education minister Giuseppe Valditara said the pilot aims to strengthen logical reasoning, critical thinking and interdisciplinary skills, preparing students for STEM pathways and a technology‑driven future. Regional and national scientific committees will monitor and evaluate the outcomes.
