Italian MP Michela Brambilla calls for total hunting ban

Italian parliamentarian Michela Vittoria Brambilla, president of the Italian League for the Defense of Animals and the Environment, argued that hunting is a cruel practice that damages wildlife, the environment and public safety. She highlighted recent statistics – 11 deaths and 31 injuries in the last season, with 462 deaths recorded between 2007 and 2025 – and called for a complete abolition of hunting, to be pursued also through a referendum.

Brambilla supported the Senate‑originated draft law accompanied by her proposal AC1670, which applies the revised constitutional article 9 on biodiversity to hunting, makes ISPRA’s opinion on hunting calendars binding, and bans the use of calls and fixed‑position hunting. She also sought the inclusion of three additional bills: ending the right of access to private land for hunting, prohibiting minors from participating in hunting trips, regulating firearm‑licence issuance and banning bow hunting. The legislation is now being considered by the Chamber of Deputies.
