Italian municipal stadiums face political scrutiny over maintenance and finances

Local political tensions are rising in Italy regarding the management and condition of municipal sports facilities. In Villa San Giovanni, Forza Italia councilor Domenico De Marco has criticized the state of the Stadio Comunale Santoro. He described the facility as being in a state of decay, citing issues with weeds, waste, and general lack of care just days before official championships begin. De Marco argued that the administration missed a vital opportunity to restore the stadium as a high-quality venue for local athletes and youth.

In Genoa, members of the Lega party have accused the Salis administration of lack of transparency regarding the Luigi Ferraris Stadium. Following a recent commission meeting, councilors Paola Bordilli and Alessio Bevilacqua claimed that the rent discount provided to clubs is 13 million euros, more than double the 6 million euros previously announced by the mayor. The opposition also criticized the administration for a rushed decision-making process regarding a 90-year concession for the stadium's sale.
