Italian municipalities adopt AI to modernize public services
Italian municipalities are implementing artificial intelligence to modernize public administration and citizen services.
In Mesagne, the city has secured 300,000 euros in funding from the Puglia Region through the FESR-FSE+ 2021-2027 program. Working alongside San Pancrazio Salentino, the project aims to integrate databases and deploy AI-driven tools. Key features include virtual assistants and chatbots to help citizens with tax obligations, a natural language search engine for administrative documents, and an intelligent tourism assistant to promote local cultural heritage. The initiative is designed to reduce manual workloads for municipal employees and provide real-time status updates on administrative procedures.
In another initiative, the municipality has partnered with the University of Cagliari to invest 150,000 euros over three years. This funding will support two doctoral research scholarships in Mathematics and Computer Science. The goal is to develop specialized algorithms and digital models to accelerate internal office procedures and improve administrative transparency and data management.
