Italian municipalities allocate millions to heritage restorations amid cost disputes

The town of Roverbella in Lombardy received a national government grant of €4.4 million to restore the historic Villa Gobio complex and the adjoining former Dancing Napoleon building. The funding, awarded through a national regeneration programme, follows earlier regional support of nearly €2 million and a €300,000 contribution for roof conservation from the Ministry of Cultural Heritage. Mayor Mattia Cortesi said the grant will enable the site to host cultural, associative, recreational and institutional activities.

In the nearby municipality of Bagnolo, the cost of renovating Piazza Garibaldi has become a point of contention. The original budget of €350,000 has risen to €600,000, though the mayor claims only a €50,000 increase is real, with the remaining €200,000 dependent on a pending regional contribution. Opposition leader Gianluca Paoli warned that the inflated figure could delay the project and questioned the transparency of public works spending.
