Italian municipalities and regions implement disability school services
In Italy, regional and local authorities are addressing the provision of specialized school assistance for students with disabilities.
The Municipality of Naples has announced that specialized school assistance services will begin on October 5 for students whose families submitted requests by the August 31 deadline. The service will include professionals such as educators, psychologists, LIS interpreters, and tiflologists. Officials stated that there will be no reductions in the assistance hours established in Individualized Educational Plans (PEI). Families who missed the initial deadline may still apply by October 31, with services activated the following month.
In the Basilicata region, regional councilor Francesco Cupparo addressed ongoing discussions regarding transport and assistance services for disabled students. The regional government has allocated 2.6 million euros for 2026 to support provinces in providing these services, plus an additional 600,000 euros distributed among municipalities to strengthen local efforts. Cupparo emphasized that these regional funds are supplementary and do not replace the financial responsibilities that municipalities must fulfill regarding their own competencies.
