Italian municipalities debate new mountain area classifications

Local administrations in Italy are addressing concerns regarding the new classification of mountain municipalities. In Quiliano, a public meeting is scheduled for September 24, 2026, to discuss the legal, administrative, and political implications of the reform. The event aims to address the impact on excluded territories and the inclusion of certain coastal municipalities that possess established tourism economies.

Several Ligurian municipalities have filed appeals with the TAR del Lazio against recent decrees from the Council of Ministers. These legal challenges argue that the new classification is inconsistent with the historical, geographical, and economic realities of various regions.

In Tagliolo, a separate public initiative will focus on the future of internal areas, including small municipalities and mountain unions. Discussions will cover essential services such as healthcare, local public transport, and digital connectivity. Critics of the current reforms argue that recent legislation and funding cuts may disadvantage small communities, potentially creating a disparity in service quality between large urban centers and smaller rural areas.
