Italian municipalities deploy surveillance to combat illegal waste dumping

Municipalities in Italy are increasing technological surveillance to combat illegal waste dumping and environmental degradation.

In Anguillara Sabazia, the local government has launched the “Ambiente protetto: tecnologia e comunità per un futuro pulito” project. Supported by the Lazio Region and the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, the initiative utilizes cameras and photo-traps in high-risk areas to assist local police in monitoring and preventing illegal dumping. Mayor Angelo Pizzigallo emphasized that while technology is vital for protecting the ecosystem and local tourism, civic awareness remains essential.

In Salerno, Mayor Vincenzo De Luca has announced the deployment of mobile “trap cameras” to identify individuals abandoning refuse. Following a viral incident where a man was caught on camera discarding a refrigerator, the mayor vowed a zero-tolerance approach. Beyond waste management, local authorities are also intensifying efforts against illegal street vending and the unauthorized use of fireworks.
