Italy intensifies crackdown on illegal waste dumping

Various municipalities across Italy are intensifying efforts to combat illegal waste dumping and environmental contamination through increased surveillance and stricter enforcement.

In Catania, local police have used environmental video surveillance to identify over 300 infractions in three months, with approximately 25% resulting in criminal proceedings. Violators face fines up to 10,000 euros, license suspensions, and potential vehicle seizure. Similarly, in Quartu Sant’Elena, authorities used camera footage to identify individuals responsible for dumping and burning construction waste in Flumini, an act that posed significant environmental and health risks.

Other regions are addressing localized issues: San Ferdinando has released footage of citizens abandoning waste to raise public awareness, while in Caulonia, cameras helped identify those turning a recently cleaned parking area into a landfill. In Favara, local clergy have issued a joint statement condemning the act of littering as a moral and civic failure.

Environmental monitoring also extends to soil and water protection. In Monza, new investigations are underway to determine the extent of nickel and hexavalent chromium contamination in an industrial area slated for residential redevelopment. In Mondello, authorities are mapping sewage connections and discharges to protect water quality. Meanwhile, in Marsala, local associations continue to report ongoing waste degradation and sea discharges in coastal areas.
