Italian municipalities invest in accessibility upgrades

Several municipalities in Italy are implementing infrastructure projects to remove architectural barriers and improve accessibility for people with disabilities and the elderly.

In Palazzolo sull’Oglio, a 550,000 euro investment has resulted in the installation of two new elevators at the Mura cemetery. These elevators, designed to accommodate both wheelchair users and funeral processions, will provide access to underground courts that were previously only reachable via stairs. The project also included widening walkways and improving paving at both the Mura and San Pancrazio cemeteries.

In Siena, the Palazzo Pubblico will undergo an accessibility upgrade costing approximately 150,000 euro. Supported by regional funding, the project involves replacing a 1960s-era elevator with a modern system. The new installation will include an additional stop, allowing visitors with mobility issues to access parts of the Civic Museum that were previously only accessible by stairs.
