Italian municipalities intensify fight against illegal waste dumping
Various Italian municipalities are implementing new measures to combat illegal waste dumping and promote environmental sustainability. In Ciampino, new recycling containers have been installed in primary and secondary schools to foster sustainable habits among students and staff.
In Lucera, the local administration and waste management company Tecneco have launched a strategy involving increased controls, the use of photo traps, and video surveillance to prevent illegal dumping. Similarly, Terni has initiated the ‘Terni Rifiuti Free’ campaign, which focuses on public awareness and enhanced monitoring to reduce the high costs associated with cleaning up abandoned waste.
Law enforcement actions are also intensifying. In Messina, municipal police used video surveillance to identify five individuals responsible for illegal waste disposal, leading to legal complaints and vehicle seizures. In Martinsicuro, authorities have increased signage and monitoring in sensitive areas to deter improper disposal. Meanwhile, in the Vibo Valentia area, the Coast Guard is investigating potential sewage discharges into the sea near Pizzo to protect the coastal environment.
