Italian municipalities manage monumental trees for safety and conservation
Municipalities in Italy are taking specific actions to manage monumental trees following safety concerns and weather damage.
In Magenta, authorities have announced the necessary removal of a tree in Piazza Liberazione to ensure public safety. The decision follows years of monitoring and attempts to stabilize the plant, which has shown structural issues since 2018, including a deep vertical crack. Vice Mayor Simone Gelli emphasized that the removal is not part of a systematic cutting policy but is a targeted measure based on detailed reports from agronomists who monitor the city's 6,000 trees.
In Belluno, officials are attempting to save a monumental cedar in Piazza dei Martiri that was severely damaged during a storm on August 6. The city is initiating specialized recovery work and seeking necessary authorizations to repair the tree. Mayor Oscar De Pellegrin stated that the administration is investing resources to preserve the tree due to its significant natural and historical value to the city. Access to the surrounding garden areas will remain restricted to ensure citizen safety and allow the tree to recover.
