Italian municipalities manage urban tree safety following recent incidents
Municipalities in Italy are addressing urban tree safety following recent incidents involving unstable or fallen trees. In Recco, authorities felled a camphor tree in Piazza Matteotti after technical assessments deemed it unstable and a risk to pedestrians and vehicles. To maintain the local arboreal heritage, a new tree of the same species is scheduled for planting immediately. The city is also working toward completing a digital mapping of its greenery by the end of the year.
In Marsala, a large tree collapsed overnight at Villa Cavallotti, landing in a children's play area. No injuries were reported as the villa was closed at the time. Local officials noted that the tree showed no obvious signs of disease, though its roots had previously disturbed nearby sidewalks. In response to such incidents, Marsala administration is working to expand public greenery management and conduct a comprehensive census of all city trees to assess their condition and intervention needs.
