Italian municipalities prepare for mayoral candidate selections

Political maneuvering is intensifying ahead of upcoming municipal elections in Caserta and Cesenatico.

In Caserta, the Democratic Party (Pd) has proposed Donatella Andrisani, a former council member, as its mayoral candidate. This move has met resistance from moderate factions and civic movements such as ‘Speranza per Caserta’ and ‘Caserta coraggiosa’. Regional councilor Pietro Smarrazzo emphasized that such a significant candidacy should result from a shared path and consensus within the broader coalition, rather than a unilateral decision.

In Cesenatico, the Democratic Party has formalized the candidacy of Jacopo Agostini, the current budget assessor. In response, the center-right coalition—comprising Fratelli d’Italia, Lega, Forza Italia, and potential civic lists—is searching for its own candidate. Potential names include minority councilors Emilio Zarrelli and Fabio Bandieri, though leaders are also considering candidates from civil society to represent the entire coalition. The selection process remains ongoing as parties weigh various profiles and political affiliations.
