Italian municipalities reclaim public housing units for families

In Palermo, three public housing units were recovered and reassigned to families listed on the emergency housing register after the previous occupants died. The operation, carried out by the municipal housing department together with the municipal police and the local Carabinieri station, was presented as a measure to prevent illegal occupations and criminal rackets that exploit public housing.

In Taranto, the historic Palazzo De Bellis, occupied for 18 years, was finally cleared. The building will be renovated into a student and university staff hub, while the nine displaced families were placed in a newly opened emergency social housing facility funded by the PNRR. Local officials emphasized support for the families' autonomy and a rapid transition to new housing.
