Italian municipalities upgrade public lighting to LED technology

Municipalities in the Marche region of Italy are implementing significant energy efficiency upgrades to their public lighting systems using LED technology.

In Montemarciano, an initiative funded by a 90,000 euro contribution from the Marche Region is replacing 400 light points. This project, managed directly by municipal maintenance staff, aims to replace aging mercury and high-pressure sodium lamps. The upgrade is expected to reduce total installed power from 56,550 to 23,706 watts, a decrease of approximately 50%. Estimated annual energy savings are 131,376 kWh, resulting in roughly 22,500 euros in yearly savings on electricity bills.

In Montefano, the municipality has signed a contract with Hera Luce to overhaul the entire public lighting network, covering 775 light points. The project includes replacing street lamps, urban furniture, and projectors, as well as modernizing electrical panels with remote monitoring capabilities. The initiative aims to cut energy consumption by 68%, reducing annual usage from 345,272 kWh to 110,307 kWh. This transition is expected to prevent the emission of approximately 98 tons of carbon dioxide annually and reduce light pollution through better beam orientation and warmer light tones.
