Italian nail care trends and health concerns

In Italy, the popularity of professional manicures has expanded with low‑cost nail salons and social‑media influence, leading many to view natural or imperfect nails as a deliberate style choice rather than neglect. The trend includes more men getting manicures, and commentators argue that apologising for unpolished nails is comparable to apologising for acne or messy hair.

Health experts warn that fragile nails can signal deeper problems such as fungal infections, nutritional deficiencies (biotin, iron, zinc) or systemic conditions like thyroid disorders and diabetes. External factors like frequent water exposure, chemicals, and excessive use of nail polish also weaken nails. Preventive measures include proper hand hygiene, protective gloves, balanced nutrition, and, when needed, medical diagnosis and treatment for infections or deficiencies.
