Italian nature parks celebrate biodiversity and conservation milestones

Italy's regional natural landscapes are highlighted through the milestones and ecological features of its protected areas. The Parco delle Groane e della Brughiera Briantea in Lombardy will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2026. Established by regional law in 1976 to protect the landscape from rapid industrialization, the park has expanded from 3,400 to 7,700 hectares. It spans 28 municipalities across the provinces of Milan, Monza e Brianza, and Como, hosting significant biodiversity including 180 bird species.

In the Puglia region, the Foresta Umbra within the Gargano National Park offers a distinct microclimate that supports diverse tree species. The forest is characterized by vigorous beech trees (Fagus sylvatica) thriving near the coast, alongside holm oaks, Aleppo pines, and various undergrowth such as holly and ferns. As part of the Natura 2000 network, the area is subject to specific conservation protections to maintain its unique ecosystem.
