Italian Navy and IRINI operation partner to protect Mediterranean infrastructure

The Italian Navy (Marina Militare) and the EUNAVFOR MED IRINI operation have signed a technical agreement in Rome to enhance cooperation regarding the protection of critical maritime infrastructure in the Central Mediterranean.

The agreement establishes protocols for information sharing, coordinated monitoring, and maritime surveillance of strategic assets, including subsea cables and pipelines. These infrastructures are vital for European digital connectivity, energy supplies, and commercial trade routes.

To improve situational awareness, the partnership will utilize secure communication channels, shared geospatial mapping systems, and coordinated reporting procedures. Operation IRINI will leverage its surveillance, early warning, and vessel tracking capabilities to identify suspicious activities near sensitive zones. This collaboration aligns with the European Union's maritime security strategy and expands IRINI's role beyond its original arms embargo mandate toward broader regional security functions.
