Italian officials call for improved caregiver support following family tragedy

Following a tragedy in Pietralata where a family including a child with disabilities was found deceased, local officials are calling for improved support systems for caregivers in Italy. Gabriele Fargnoli, the Social Policy Councilor for Ladispoli, has urged regional official Massimiliano Maselli to ensure more stable and accessible assistance for those caring for fragile family members.

Fargnoli highlighted the need to implement regional law n. 5/2024, which aims to recognize and support family caregivers. Key requested measures include unlocking funds for 'Dopo di Noi' initiatives and family homes, enhancing service vouchers for non-self-sufficiency—potentially up to 700 euros per month for home care and day centers—and the introduction of the 'Card Giver'.

In Rome, the incident has highlighted systemic gaps in assistance. While resources exist, they are often described as fragmented and difficult to access due to bureaucratic hurdles and inconsistent service availability across different municipalities. Advocates are calling for more integrated social desks, increased capacity in day centers, and faster multidisciplinary evaluations to prevent the isolation and mental health struggles faced by caregivers.
