Italian officials launch security initiatives for seniors and livestock amid rising thefts

In Centuripe, a meeting organized by ANAP Confartigianato and local police officials on 19 June focused on protecting elderly citizens from fraud, pickpocketing and online scams. The discussion highlighted new legislation that can impose up to six years in prison for crimes against people over 65, and stressed the importance of public awareness to prevent victimisation.

In Messina, the provincial security committee, chaired by Prefect Cosima Di Stani, convened to address a sharp increase in livestock thefts in the Nebrodi Park area. Officials reported that reported thefts have almost doubled over the past two years. The prefect ordered reinforced territorial patrols, including helicopter support and specialised Carabinieri hunter units, and called for video‑surveillance projects and closer cooperation with farmers and Coldiretti representatives to curb the crime.

Both events illustrate coordinated efforts by Italian authorities to strengthen public safety measures against fraud targeting seniors and the surge in rural thefts.
