Italian opposition leaders call for unity to challenge Meloni government
Matteo Renzi, leader of ItaliaViva, has called for a unified center-left coalition, known as 'campo largo', to defeat the Meloni administration. Speaking at a Casa Riformista convention in Rende, organized by Filomena Greco, Renzi argued that the Democratic Party (PD), Five Star Movement (M5S), and Avs cannot win alone and must set aside internal divisions to present a cohesive economic strategy.
Renzi criticized the current government as the most ‘anti-southern’ in the history of the Republic, suggesting that Southern Italy could become a major economic opportunity for Europe if properly supported. He specifically addressed the need to enforce the 40% territorial rebalancing clause for public spending.
In Sardinia, PD Secretary Elly Schlein’s visit to Cagliari has helped ease tensions within the regional 'campo largo' coalition. While disagreements persist regarding the composition of permanent commissions and the distribution of leadership roles between the PD and M5S, Schlein reaffirmed support for Governor Alessandra Todde and the progressive legislative program, including proposals for assisted suicide and free university education.
