Italian opposition leaders debate program and leadership

Italian opposition leaders Giuseppe Conte and Elly Schlein are navigating internal dynamics and strategic planning as they prepare an alternative to Giorgia Meloni’s government. Schlein, leader of the Democratic Party (PD), is hosting a national convention in Montepulciano titled ‘Pronti per l’alternativa’ (Ready for the alternative). The three-day event focuses on defining programmatic priorities, including climate change, artificial intelligence, education, and foreign policy, while addressing the broader challenge of leadership within the ‘Campo Largo’ progressive coalition.

Giuseppe Conte, leader of the Five Star Movement (M5S), has responded to Schlein’s recent moves regarding leadership and her potential candidacy for Prime Minister. While Conte acknowledged Schlein’s claims as legitimate, he emphasized the urgent need for the opposition to present a concrete political program. He noted that with rising social unrest and the country facing significant challenges, the various opposition forces must move beyond personal interests to provide specific proposals for the electorate.
