Elly Schlein calls for Meloni's resignation amid leadership disputes

During a national meeting of the Democratic Party (PD), leader Elly Schlein launched a sharp critique of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government, calling for its resignation and early elections. Schlein cited several economic grievances, including record-high tax pressure, low wages, and high energy costs, while also highlighting a decline in birth rates and rising poverty affecting nearly 6 million Italians.

Meloni responded via social media, dismissing Schlein's claims as ‘ten falsehoods.’

Within the progressive opposition alliance, known as ‘campo largo,’ tensions have emerged regarding leadership. Schlein asserted that the PD's superior electoral weight—having secured double the votes of other alliance members in recent elections—should grant it a leading role, stating ‘one does not equal one.’ In response, Movimento 5 Stelle leader Giuseppe Conte challenged her position by insisting on democratic primaries to decide the coalition's leadership. Conte also emphasized that the alliance must prioritize citizen concerns, such as reducing military spending and increasing investment in healthcare and education.
