Italian organ donors' multiorgan retrievals save multiple lives

A 71‑year‑old man from Ascoli Piceno died of a cerebral hemorrhage and, after consent from his family, his heart, liver, kidneys and corneas were harvested at Hospital Mazzoni. The procedure involved a multidisciplinary team from the local health authority, the Regional Transplant Center of Marche and surgeons from the University Hospital Santa Maria della Misericordia in Udine, the Policlinico in Milan and the University Hospital of Ancona.

In Vibo Valentia, pianist Andrea Minasi was declared dead after a road‑traffic accident. Surgeons removed her heart, lungs, kidneys, uterus, corneas and liver, with the liver split for two children awaiting transplant. The multiorgan donation is expected to save seven recipients. Funerary rites were held in the city’s main church, and the local community expressed solidarity with her family.
