Italian overseas election procedures spark debate among citizens
Italian citizens living abroad are facing significant logistical hurdles as the deadline approaches for submitting signatures required to run in the 2026 COM. IT. ES. elections. To participate, lists must collect between 100 and 200 signatures, depending on the size of the consular district, which must then be authenticated by the relevant Italian consulate.
Reports from the United States, Europe, and Latin America indicate widespread dissatisfaction with the current procedure. Challenges include long distances to consular offices, incompatible working hours, and limited information dissemination. For instance, Italian communities in areas like Rochester and Bermuda in New York face potential exclusion due to their distance from consular headquarters.
Ornella Fado, Vice President of the COM. IT. ES. of New York, has highlighted these difficulties, noting that the process is perceived as inadequate for the diverse geographic realities of citizens residing abroad.
