Italian Parliament Approves Enzo Tortora Day for Judicial Error Victims

The Italian Chamber of Deputies passed a law establishing a national "Enzo Tortora Day" on June 17, the anniversary of the journalist’s 1983 arrest, to honor victims of judicial errors and promote the principles of presumption of innocence and a fair trial. The measure received 178 votes in favour and 97 abstentions; the Senate still must vote. Support came from the centre‑right coalition, Italia Viva and Azione, while the Democratic Party, the Five Star Movement and the Greens and Left Alliance abstained, citing procedural concerns. Lawmaker Enrico Costa described the initiative as a historic battle against miscarriage of justice, and Gaia Tortora, the journalist’s daughter, criticised the abstentions on social media. Davide Faraone of Italia Viva warned that parliamentary delays could stall the proposal before the end of the legislature.
