Italian Parliament debates Pedemontana tribunal and Verona appeal court

Mayor Giacomo Possamai of Vicenza appeared before the Chamber’s Justice Commission to argue against the draft law that would establish a new Pedemontana Tribunal in the Veneto region. He warned that the tribunal would be staffed by reallocating personnel from already understaffed courts in Vicenza, Padua and Treviso, where administrative vacancies approach 50%, and noted that more than sixty mayors in the province have formally opposed the proposal.

In the same session, Committee chairman Ciro Maschi presented a companion proposal to create a second Court of Appeal in Verona. The plan received backing from regional leaders such as Veneto President Luca Zaia, the president of the Province of Verona, and the Verona mayor, while a few local officials expressed differing views on the Pedemontana project. The hearings marked the first coordinated endorsement from multiple Veneto municipalities and provincial bodies for the Verona appeal court and highlighted the ongoing debate over judicial geography reforms in Italy.
