Italian parties push for local representation in Sicily and Taranto ahead of 2027 elections

The centrist Democrazia Cristiana (DC) held a regional meeting in Caltanissetta, Sicily, and asked President of the Sicilian Region Renato Schifani for a direct confrontation. The party said the request was made after a gathering of members, administrators and elected officials, and announced that a meeting with the governor is planned for next week. DC reiterated its desire to strengthen its territorial base, cited recent local election gains, and emphasized that any future centre‑right alliance must preserve its democratic‑Christian identity.

In Puglia, Democratic Party deputy Davide De Fazio warned that Taranto has been represented in Parliament by candidates from outside the province. He praised the recent appointment of local lawyer Francesca Viggiano to the Chamber, saying, “It is more just and effective that Taranto be represented by someone born and raised here, who knows the territory’s problems and potentials.” De Fazio called for the Ionian Democratic Party to support candidates rooted in the region for the 2027 national elections, rejecting top‑down selections from party leadership.
