Fofi President highlights evolving role of Italian pharmacists
Andrea Mandelli, president of the Federation of Italian Pharmacists' Orders (Fofi), highlighted the evolving role of pharmacists as essential healthcare professionals during a meeting in Milan. He noted that the profession has moved beyond simple medication dispensing to include personalized services through galenic laboratories and diagnostic support, such as blood glucose monitoring, electrocardiograms, and vaccinations.
Mandelli emphasized that synergy between pharmacists and doctors is vital to address the needs of Italy’s aging population and declining birth rates. He cited the importance of teamwork in line with Dm77 regulations to improve patient care and reduce bureaucracy for physicians.
In the Veneto region, this shift is already visible through the rise of clinical pharmacists. These professionals work within hospitals and community pharmacies to manage drug interactions, suggest alternative treatments, and monitor patient adherence to therapies. Experts note that patients often feel more comfortable discussing health details with pharmacists, making them key figures in home-based care models.
