Italian police arrest two men in fake Carabinieri scams against seniors

In Rome, a 38‑year‑old man received a telephone call from callers posing as a Carabinieri marshal who claimed the victim's son was in custody and demanded cash and jewellery. The man kept the line open, alerted real Carabinieri and police, and authorities intercepted the suspects at the rendezvous point, arresting a 22‑year‑old suspect from Naples before any money changed hands.

In a separate incident, an 86‑year‑old woman in Italy was similarly deceived, handed over about €5,000 and several pieces of jewellery after being told her son had been arrested. A bystander warned municipal police, who, together with the Carabinieri, seized the two perpetrators – a 30‑year‑old man from the province of Caserta and a 26‑year‑old Tunisian – and recovered the stolen items.
