Italian police crackdown on fake‑marshal scams targeting seniors
Police forces across Italy have stepped up operations against organised fraud schemes that impersonate Carabinieri or other law‑enforcement officers to deceive elderly victims. In Siracusa, officers intervened in three separate scams on the same day – two attempts were foiled, while a third resulted in the loss of jewellery worth roughly €30,000. Similar investigations in Matera, Sassari and other cities have led to the arrest of several suspects, including two young women from Naples who posed as a marshal’s relative and a prosecutor to obtain gold jewellery and cash from an older man.
A nationwide door‑to‑door sales network also targets elderly women, offering overpriced household goods under false contract claims. The investigation by the Guardia di Finanza and the public prosecutor has identified more than 1,200 victims across many Italian provinces, resulting in multiple arrests and a seizure of assets worth millions of euros.
