Italian police conduct mass searches following protest unrest
Italian authorities conducted over 150 searches across Milan, Monza, and approximately 20 other cities, primarily in the Lombardy region, following widespread protests. The operations were triggered by a WhatsApp group discovered on a suspect's phone linked to clashes on October 17 and 18. According to the Milan Prosecutor's Office, the group contained messages inciting aggression and robbery against law enforcement officers, specifically aiming to steal their weapons, damaging service vehicles, and setting fire to public buildings.
The searches occurred amidst nationwide demonstrations involving young people protesting against war, militarization, and the rising cost of living. While previous unrest on October 17 involved looting, recent clashes in cities such as Turin, Milan, Bologna, Florence, and Rome resulted in confrontations but no reported looting.
Reports indicate significant law enforcement presence, including military deployment in Milan. The protests led to 9 arrests, 87 charges, and 371 detentions, including 110 minors. At least 17 people were injured during the clashes, including five police officers.
