Italian authorities impose fines on illegal beach uses across Sardinia, Calabria, Sicily and Puglia
During the summer of 2026 Italian maritime and environmental agencies carried out coordinated inspections of public beaches in several regions. In the south of Sardinia, the Coast Guard and the Forest Service fined operators more than €15,000 for violations such as oversized umbrellas, illegal structures, missing accessibility ramps and unauthorised mooring of boats, using drones to monitor the shoreline.
In Cirò Marina, Calabria, the Coast Guard reclaimed about 673 m² of public seafront, removed unauthorised equipment and referred the beach‑operator to the prosecutor for illegal occupation of demarcated land.
Joint police, forest and labour inspections in Catania, Sicily, uncovered irregularities at two seaside establishments on Kennedy Avenue, including lack of disabled facilities, undeclared workers and non‑traceable food products, resulting in fines totalling roughly €24,000 and seizure of unsafe animal food.
Similar checks in the Salento area of Puglia identified ten administrative breaches, imposed fines of about €10,000, suspended licences and addressed worker‑safety and food‑safety shortcomings. The operations demonstrate a nationwide effort to enforce demarcated beach regulations, protect coastal ecosystems and ensure lawful use of public maritime domains.
