Italian police and city staff demand increased personnel amid shortages

The Italian State Police union (SIAP) warned that the police staffing at Catania International Airport is insufficient, with only about 20 of roughly 130 officers assigned to border checks while the rest are diverted to administrative duties. The union says this hampers traveller processing, raises safety risks and could impact airline operations.

The COISP‑MOSAP union in the province of Fermo reported that three new police commissioners merely replace outgoing staff and that five senior officers are being transferred without replacements. The union fears reduced patrol presence, shorter opening hours for public offices and lower service quality for residents.

The UIL FP union of Taranto municipal employees highlighted chronic staff shortages, increasing workloads and organisational difficulties that strain municipal services and affect citizens. The union calls for immediate concrete measures to reinforce personnel and improve internal coordination.
