Italian police officer sentenced over Marco Dongu fatal crash

A 24‑year‑old police officer from Teano was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment, suspended, and received a one‑year driving‑license suspension for causing the 2021 crash that killed 26‑year‑old motorcyclist Marco Dongu on the Variante Anas near Caserta. The officer was driving a police patrol car while performing a prohibited U‑turn on the highway, colliding with Dongu’s Yamaha motorcycle.

Dongu’s family denounced the verdict, with his uncle Massimiliano Dongu stating, “How much is Marco’s life worth? The state’s answer is two years of conditional imprisonment and a one‑year licence suspension.” The relatives argue the punishments do not reflect the seriousness of the loss and accuse the police of reckless conduct.

The case underscores ongoing concerns about police driving safety in Italy and has sparked public debate over accountability for law‑enforcement officers involved in traffic incidents.
