Italian police probe ATM bomb attacks using 'marmotta' technique

Two separate incidents in Italy saw criminals target bank ATMs with explosive devices using the so‑called “marmotta” technique. In Bisceglie, two explosions ripped through a Monte dei Paschi di Siena ATM around 03:00, shattering glass and damaging the branch but causing no injuries. Police, fire units and forensic investigators are reviewing video footage and assessing the damage.

In Pescorocchiano, an ATM in the Marsicano area was blown up, prompting a rapid Carabinieri response that led to the arrest of a 49‑year‑old suspect from Cerignola and the seizure of a rental car used by the gang. Technical teams from the provincial anti‑sabotage unit and local investigators are gathering evidence to identify additional participants.

Both attacks involved coordinated use of explosives to breach the cash vaults, and authorities are continuing investigations to prevent further incidents.
