Naples anti-mafia raid seizes 3.2 million euros hidden in apartment walls
Italian authorities conducted a major anti-mafia operation in Caivano, near Naples, resulting in the arrest of 34 individuals allegedly linked to the Angelino clan. During a raid on an apartment, investigators discovered approximately 3.2 million euros in cash meticulously hidden within walls, floors, and furniture. The money, primarily in 50-euro notes wrapped in cellophane, was reportedly extracted using plastic buckets.
In addition to the cash, police seized 11 luxury Rolex watches valued at over 127,000 euros, firearms including Kalashnikov-type weapons, and drug trafficking paraphernalia. The investigation, led by anti-mafia prosecutor Nicola Gratteri, utilized wiretaps of incarcerated mobsters whose mobile phones had been smuggled into prison by relatives.
Authorities described the criminal group as operating under an 'entrepreneurial' model, utilizing organized shifts to manage drug trafficking and extortion activities. The seized funds are slated to be transferred to the State Justice Fund to support victims of organized crime.
