Italian police seize $500,000 cannabis cache on Ponza island
Police divers from the 4th Squadron of the Naval Unit of Gaeta and the Guardia di Finanza uncovered more than 40 kg (330 blocks) of cannabis hidden in a sea‑accessible cave on Ponza, a popular Italian tourist island. The stash, valued at over half a million dollars, was found in a small cavern at Chiaia di Luna after divers entered through a tunnel from a boat. Authorities believe the drugs were brought by an inflatable vessel from Anzio and were intended for the upcoming summer tourist season, which is expected to draw around 15,000 visitors. The mayor of Ponza, Francesco Ambrosino, noted the island has only five police officers, emphasizing the importance of the seizure for public safety.
