Italian police unions oppose military involvement in public order
Italian police unions, including Silp Cgil and SIULP, have expressed strong opposition to a proposed government decree that would involve military personnel in public order management and security services.
Silp Cgil Secretary General Pietro Colapietro described the move as a “leap in the dark,” arguing that using the military to compensate for structural staffing shortages in the State Police is a mistake. He emphasized that public order requires specialized training and a civilian chain of command, noting that military forces are prepared for warfare rather than managing social conflicts in urban settings.
Similarly, SIULP Secretary General Felice Romano condemned the potential militarization of security, stating it would compress constitutional rights and freedom of expression. Romano characterized the move as a tactic typical of authoritarian regimes and called on democratic political forces and civil society to oppose the decision, warning of potential mobilizations.
