Italian Police warn of impersonation email scams

The Polizia Postale has issued a warning regarding fraudulent emails impersonating the Italian police. These phishing attempts use official logos, headers, and signatures—including those of the Chief of Police and other high-ranking officials—to appear authentic.

The scam involves sending messages that mimic official notifications, summons, or judicial acts. Recipients are falsely accused of viewing illegal content, such as child pornography, and are pressured to provide justifications to avoid criminal proceedings. Once a victim responds, scammers typically demand money to close the alleged investigation.

The Polizia di Stato emphasizes that they do not use email or messaging to notify individuals of judicial measures or to request payments for fines, penalties, or other sums of money. Citizens are advised not to click on links, open attachments, or provide personal data. Suspicious communications should be reported through official Polizia Postale channels.
