Italian political leaders debate primaries and alliance unity

Italian political leaders are debating the necessity of primary elections and programmatic unity ahead of potential alliances. Giuseppe Conte, president of the Five Star Movement, has called for clarity and loyalty regarding the use of primaries to select competitive candidates. He warned against a ‘strongest party takes all’ approach, arguing that such a dynamic would degrade smaller political forces to mere ‘bushes’ and prevent them from feeling like co-protagonists in a shared project to oppose Giorgia Meloni’s government.

Angelo Bonelli, co-spokesperson for Europe Greens and deputy for the Alliance Verdi e Sinistra, emphasized that a clear political program must precede discussions on candidates. He criticized the current government's handling of energy costs and social injustice, while also warning against a shift toward presidentialism. Bonelli argued that the current electoral direction seeks to move Italy toward a model of individual command without parliamentary counterweights, suggesting that tactical debates over candidate names should not overshadow the fundamental future of the country.
