Italian politicians address Iran tensions and US election results
Italian political leaders have responded to recent developments regarding the conflict in Iran and the outcome of the United States midterm elections.
Carlo Fidanza, the Fratelli d’Italia delegation leader in Europe, described the American election results as a “clear and indisputable verdict.” He suggested that the conflict in Iran and its subsequent impact on fuel prices and inflation contributed to the Republican loss of support. Fidanza emphasized the political autonomy of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, stating that Donald Trump was never a “beacon” for the Italian center-right, though he remains a political interlocutor.
Senator Stefania Craxi, president of the Forza Italia group in the Senate, addressed intimidating statements from an Iranian parliamentarian regarding military bases in Italy and Germany. Craxi urged against dramatization, suggesting the rhetoric aims to create divisions between Atlantic allies following the US vote. She reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to de-escalation and diplomatic solutions, while maintaining that defending freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is essential for protecting Italian commerce and economic interests.
