Italian Popular Legislative Initiatives Gain Institutional Support

In Piedmont, the “Liberi Subito” proposal for a regional law on voluntary end‑of‑life assistance has attracted growing backing from local authorities. Twenty‑six municipal leaders – 22 mayors and 4 deputy mayors – have signed the initiative, joining regional councillors, parliamentarians and other officials across the political spectrum. Coordinators Davide Di Mauro and Lidia Sessa highlighted the cross‑party support as evidence that the dignity and conscience issues behind the proposal are transcending traditional partisan lines.

Separately, the trade‑union federation CGIL has launched a signature campaign at the Foligno hospital to promote two popular‑initiative bills on health care and public procurement. Union leaders including national secretary Tatiana Cazzaniga and regional officials called for a financing boost of 7.5% of GDP for the National Health Service and for stronger safeguards against subcontracting and contract dumping. The drive seeks to involve citizens directly in the legislative process for these sectoral reforms.
