Italian Prefects Association discusses AI integration in public administration

At a national conference held in Vicenza, the Italian Prefects Association (AIP) discussed the impact of artificial intelligence on public administration. AIP Secretary General Filippo Romano emphasized that while AI can transform areas such as migration flow management and emergency prevention, core responsibilities like social mediation, institutional coordination, and territorial governance must remain human-led.

Research presented at the event highlighted varying public and professional perspectives. A study by Ipsos Doxa found that 68% of Italians view Prefectures as useful, though only 57% correctly identify their territorial jurisdiction. Meanwhile, research from SDA Bocconi indicated high engagement and professional pride among career officials, suggesting that innovation and organizational well-being are key areas for future development.

The discussion also touched upon a fundamental shift in how public services operate. Rather than simply using AI to automate existing bureaucratic forms, the goal is to move toward a system where interoperable data allows the administration to recognize life events automatically—such as a change of residence—thereby eliminating the need for citizens to initiate manual administrative procedures.
